Why commercial

Your personal policy won't cover this.

If you use a vehicle for any business purpose — deliveries, client visits, hauling tools, transporting goods — your personal auto policy will likely deny the claim. One uncovered accident could cost you the business.

  • Personal policy excludes business use, deliveries, and hired-out vehicles.
  • Commercial policy covers business use, employees driving, and cargo.
  • Higher liability limits protect your business assets in a lawsuit.
  • Certificates of insurance you can show clients, landlords, or general contractors.

One claim could cost the business.

A commercial policy costs far less than what a single uncovered claim would. If your vehicle earns money, it needs commercial insurance.

What's the difference between personal and commercial auto insurance?
Personal auto insurance covers your vehicle for personal use — commuting, errands, family trips. The moment you start using that vehicle for business — making deliveries, hauling tools to a job site, transporting clients — most personal policies exclude coverage. Commercial auto is built for that business use, with higher liability limits and protection for employees driving on your behalf.
Do I need commercial insurance if I only use my vehicle for work occasionally?
Likely yes — even occasional business use can trigger an exclusion on a personal policy. If you regularly haul work materials, make business deliveries, drive employees to jobs, or visit clients, you should be on a commercial policy. The cost is usually a few hundred dollars per year more, and protects you from claims that could otherwise cost tens of thousands.
What's a Certificate of Insurance (COI) and how fast can I get one?
A Certificate of Insurance is a one-page document proving you carry the coverage required by a contract, landlord, or general contractor. Most clients ask for one before you can start work. We issue them the same day, with no extra fees, and can include additional insured endorsements if your contract requires them.
Does commercial auto cover my employees driving their own cars for work?
Standard commercial auto policies cover vehicles your business owns. If employees use their own vehicles for work, you need Hired and Non-Owned Auto Liability (HNOA) coverage — usually added to your commercial policy or your general liability for a relatively small premium. Without it, your business can still be sued if your employee causes an accident while running an errand for you.
How much does commercial auto insurance cost?
It depends on your industry, the number and type of vehicles, your drivers' records, where you operate, and the coverage limits you choose. A single contractor's pickup might cost a bit more than a personal policy; a fleet of 10 delivery vans is significantly more. We compare quotes from 40+ commercial carriers and find the best rate for your specific situation.
Can I add or remove vehicles from my fleet policy?
Yes — fleet policies are designed to scale with your business. Add or remove vehicles any time, get updated certificates of insurance the same day, and only pay for what you actually have on the road. Call us or stop by any of our 6 locations to make changes.
Do I need workers' compensation if I'm a sole proprietor?
California law requires workers' compensation as soon as you have at least one employee — even if it's a relative or part-time worker. Sole proprietors without employees are usually exempt, but some industries (like roofing) require coverage regardless. We'll check your situation and let you know exactly what's required.
What information do I need to get a commercial auto quote?
Basic info to get started: your business name and type, list of vehicles (year, make, model, VIN), drivers and their licenses, how the vehicles are used (delivery, sales, hauling, etc.), your current coverage limits, and any contracts that require specific coverage minimums. We'll walk you through everything in the office or on a phone call.
