Covered California explained

The state marketplace where subsidies live.

Covered California is the state's official health insurance marketplace. Going through it (with our help) is the only way to qualify for federal subsidies and state premium assistance that can dramatically reduce your monthly cost.

  • Premium subsidies — most enrollees qualify for monthly assistance.
  • Cost-sharing reductions — lower copays and deductibles for eligible enrollees.
  • Standardized plans — Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers make plans easier to compare.
  • Guaranteed coverage — no one can be denied for pre-existing conditions.
Did you know?
9 in 10 Californians who enroll qualify for financial help.

Most people pay much less than the sticker price for their plan. The only way to find out exactly what you'd pay is to check your eligibility — which we do for free.

What is Covered California and how does it work?
Covered California is California's official health insurance marketplace, created under the Affordable Care Act. It's the only place you can apply for federal premium subsidies and state cost-sharing reductions that lower your monthly cost. We're a certified partner, so we can help you enroll for free, in English or Spanish.
How much does health insurance cost in California?
It depends on your income, household size, age, and where you live. Most Californians who enroll through Covered California qualify for premium assistance — some pay as little as $0/month after subsidies. The only way to know your actual cost is to check eligibility, which we do for free.
What's the difference between Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans?
These metal tiers describe how costs are split between you and your plan. Bronze has the lowest monthly premium but higher out-of-pocket costs; Platinum has the highest monthly premium but the lowest costs when you use care. Silver is most popular and is the only tier eligible for cost-sharing reductions if you qualify. We'll help you pick the right tier based on how often you use care.
Do I qualify for Medi-Cal?
Medi-Cal is California's free or low-cost health coverage for low-income individuals and families. Eligibility is based primarily on income (typically under 138% of the Federal Poverty Level for adults). When you apply through us, we automatically check whether you qualify for Medi-Cal first — it's free and includes the same benefits as private coverage.
Can I enroll in health insurance any time of year?
Open Enrollment runs every year from November through January, when anyone can enroll. Outside of that window, you can only enroll if you have a Qualifying Life Event — like losing other coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving. Medi-Cal enrollment is open year-round.
How much does your enrollment help cost?
Nothing. As a Certified Covered California partner, we're compensated by Covered California — not by you. Whether you enroll in five minutes or take a few visits to decide, our help is always free, with no strings attached.
Can I keep my doctor with a Covered California plan?
It depends on which network your doctor accepts. Each plan has its own network of doctors and hospitals. Before you enroll, give us your current doctor's name and we'll check which carriers include them — so you don't have to switch providers if you don't want to.
What if I have a pre-existing condition?
You can't be denied coverage or charged more because of a pre-existing condition. All Covered California plans must accept you, and all plans cover the same essential health benefits — including treatment for pre-existing conditions from day one.
Do you offer health insurance for small businesses?
Yes — through Covered California for Small Business (CCSB). If you have between 1 and 100 employees, you can offer group health benefits to your team. We'll help you compare plans, manage enrollment, and stay compliant. Many small businesses qualify for tax credits, too.
