Why you need it

Your U.S. policy stops at the border.

Driving into Mexico without valid Mexican auto insurance isn't just risky — it's illegal under Mexican law. Even if your U.S. policy claims to cover Mexico, it's not recognized by Mexican authorities.

  • Driving uninsured in Mexico can result in vehicle impoundment and detention.
  • You're personally liable for all damages and injuries in an accident.
  • Mexico requires insurance from an authorized Mexican carrier — not your U.S. provider.

Your U.S. policy doesn't work here.

Some U.S. carriers offer limited "Mexico coverage" within a few miles of the border — but it's not a substitute for a real Mexican policy and isn't recognized by Mexican law.

Always carry your Mexican policy document in the vehicle. You'll need to show it at checkpoints and in the event of an accident.

Do I really need Mexican auto insurance to drive in Mexico?
Yes — it's required by Mexican law. Driving without it can lead to vehicle impoundment, detention, fines, and full personal liability for any damages. Even if you only cross for a few hours, the law applies the moment you're south of the border.
Will my U.S. auto insurance cover me in Mexico?
No. U.S. auto insurance policies are not recognized as valid in Mexico, even if some U.S. insurers offer limited "Mexico coverage" for a few miles past the border. You're still required to have a real Mexican policy from an authorized Mexican carrier.
What's the difference between basic liability and full coverage?
Basic liability (Responsabilidad Civil) is the legal minimum — it only covers damage you cause to other people, vehicles, or property. It does not cover your own vehicle, your medical bills, or your passengers' injuries. Full coverage adds collision, theft, vandalism, medical payments, and legal assistance — meaningful protection if something happens to you on the trip.
How much does Mexican insurance cost?
It depends on three things: your vehicle (make, model, year, and value), how long you're going to Mexico, and the coverage level you choose. Daily policies start at a few dollars; annual policies cost less per day. Call us with your vehicle info and trip dates and we'll give you an exact quote in minutes.
Can I get a short-term policy for a quick trip?
Yes. Policies are available for as little as one day, or for a week, a month, six months, or a full year. Daily and weekly policies are ideal for vacations or quick weekend trips. If you cross frequently, an annual policy almost always costs less per day.
What documents do I need to buy Mexican insurance?
Just four things: your driver's license (any country), your vehicle's current registration, basic vehicle details (make, model, year, value, VIN), and your travel dates and destinations. The whole process takes about 10 minutes from walk-in to policy in hand.
What should I do if I'm in an accident in Mexico?
Stay calm and don't move your vehicle until authorities arrive. Call the emergency number printed on your Mexican insurance policy — they'll send a bilingual adjuster and legal representative to the scene. Follow their guidance and don't sign anything you don't fully understand. Your policy includes legal support specifically for this.
Does my Mexican insurance work in all parts of Mexico?
Yes — policies from authorized Mexican carriers like GNP and HDI are valid nationwide, from Tijuana to Cancún. Some carriers also extend coverage to certain parts of Guatemala and Belize if you're planning a longer trip — just let us know your route when you get your quote.
